Niya Kight is one of those people you are instantly drawn to. I came across her Instagram page a few months ago and have been intrigued to know what her story was since.
A few weeks ago she posted a picture and she was just glowing, there was something visibly different about her. I commented and Niya thanked me, she explained she’s been working hard on herself.
I’ve been on my own path of healing physically, mentally, and emotionally post-cancer treatment. I asked her on the show because I basically wanted her to tell me her magic formula! What I learned is Niya is someone who has dealt with a number of challenges in the past couple of years that have forced her to make radical changes.
Pregnancy & breast cancer
Niya found a lump while she was breastfeeding her oldest child. She admits she put off seeing the doctor for a number of months. When she did see her doctor Niya found out she was pregnant. Her doctor was concerned pregnancy would make cancer grow faster. Once she was diagnosed Niya describes the wonderful feelings of pregnancy being replaced with fear.
Delaying cancer treatment
Pregnancy adds an extra layer of complexity to treating cancer. As Niya explained she wasn’t able to begin treatment until the end of her second trimester. She had her mastectomy first to give her baby more time to grow so it would be safer to have chemotherapy. Niya describes feeling anxious as she imagined cancer growing in the first few months of her pregnancy.
The pandemic & a silver lining
Lockdown created a space for Niya to be with her young son and focus inward. She discovered a meditation app called Insight and listened to one mediation in particular over and over. The meditation was “I love you cancer, I forgive you cancer,’. She said this until she believed it, she opened herself to whatever emotions came and found a sense of peace.
Making changes
Niya’s healing journey started before her cancer treatment started - she says cancer saved her life. It was the wake-up call she needed, she explains she had a level of victimhood and chaos in her life. Niya felt stagnant. Cancer provided an opportunity to change all of this, she devoted time to removing beliefs, people, things that did not serve her.
Listen to Niya’s story to learn how she has stayed on a path of healing.
