Meet Candice Kitt, a compassionate and experienced Pinc & Steel NZ physiotherapist. Candice specialises in working with individuals undergoing cancer treatment or recovery. As a strong advocate for the power of exercise in managing the side effects of cancer treatment, Candice strives to empower her clients by reminding them that something is always better than nothing when it comes to staying active.


Exercise is this wonder drug, by doing nothing, is now doing harm. And even little bits of exercise can have a massive impact on cancer, recurrence cancer, mortality, even all cause mortality.

Exercise and your cancer journey


Candice Kitt joined me on Cancer Conversations to talk about exercise. My journey with exercise hasn't been easy post-cancer treatment. I've struggled to find gyms or trainers who understand a cancer diagnosis's physical and emotional impact on you.


Based in the far north of New Zealand, Candice has a holistic exercise approach. She's passionate about helping individuals regain their physical and emotional strength after receiving life-altering news. Candice points out fear can be a significant barrier to cancer patients, and she advocates that people try and find a safe environment to feel comfortable exploring different types of exercise.

Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Patients

Regular physical activity can provide numerous benefits for cancer patients, including improved energy levels, mood, and increased strength. Exercise, however, may seem daunting for those undergoing treatment or in recovery due to concerns about causing harm, interfering with therapy, or previous fitness levels. In general, incorporating even small amounts of exercise can make a difference and help improve overall health. Focusing on realistic goals and enjoyable activities is vital for maintaining motivation and consistency.


Candice encourages individuals to set their own goals and engage in various exercises to achieve the recommended 150 minutes of mixed-mode weekly activity. She clarifies that exercise doesn't need to follow a specific structure or gym routine; walking and resistance training, for instance, can significantly impact health. Candice encourages us to be mindful of our bodies and gradually build strength.
